E39 Error Message on a TP400 Calculating Time Recorder

Introduction

When trying to clock in sometimes the error message E39 will appear on the display and the card will be ejected without clocking. The user guide definition of this error code is that 'The time card is damaged.' While this can be the case there are other reasons which could account for the error, these are discussed below. It is worth noting that each clock card is uniquely numbered (1 to 100) and that number is read through the bar code using a bar code reader inside the machine.

Incorrect Clock Card

The correct and only clock card which will work consistently with the TP400 machine is the TP4M card. Other bar coded cards may work but rarely consistently. If the machine has issues reading a different card from an alternative supplier then the Error code E39 is often displayed. Sometimes some of the cards from the pack of 100 will work but not all. Please purchase genuine TP4M cards from this link  TP4M Clock Cards

To check your cards please look at the bar coded side, the code is on the bottom right hand corner as shown below.

Dust on the Sensor

This is a common reason for the error E39, but usually also a very easy one to resolve.

Grab the key for the machine and remove the lid.

Next, blow inside around the area where the card goes down to remove any dust or dirt. If you have an air duster then use this but blowing is also fine.

Do not use an industrial airline as this is too powerful!

Place the lid back on, lock up. and try a card.

Marks on the Card

This one is quite rare but worth checking. Sometimes a fault can occur with the feed rollers causing the card to jam as it is being pulled into the machine. This results in a dark mark on the card around the bar code (and the other side too). The image below shows an example of this.

If this fault is observed then the machine will have to be returned for repair.

Please return the machine to:

Damaged Card

Finally, the clock card may actually be damaged or have some other marks around the bar code. This error will be isolated to just one card, so replacing the card should solve the issue.
